MELITEK takes part in unique cooperation

MELITEK contribute to a life-saving project namely the PVC-free blood bag project.

At present, there are no PVC-free blood bags for red blood cells on the market. However, blood bags made from DEHP-plasticized PVC (polyvinylchloride) are estimated to both have a negative impact on human health and the natural environment.

One aim of the PVC free blood bag project, driven by the Jegrelius Institute for Applied Green Chemestry, Regional Council of Jämtland in Sweden, is to demonstrate that it is possible to produce a PVC-free bag that fulfils a requirements specification, including CE labelling.

Four European companies, namely MELITEK A/S, Wipak Oy, Primo Profile and Haemotronic SpA, are project beneficiaries and work together in order to produce a PVC-free blood bag. Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden will be responsible for evaluating the bag. The project have received co-sponsorship via EU Life+ programme.
